ADJACENT TO PEOPLES’ PARK, DUN LAOGHAIRE, CO. DUBLIN
The Raised Promenade forms a new public amenity space and helps address some broader strategic issues in relation to the Peoples Park. The Dart cutting has always created a physical separation between the park and the coastline. The culverting of the cutting has directly addressed this issue. The new space creates a direct linkage with the park and the coastline along Newtownsmith.
The elevated space bookends the park creating a visual termination along the north south axis and a counterpoint to the pavilion and terrace. The space itself contains generous bespoke seating, picnic table and coastal trees & planting providing a place for rest, relaxation, viewing and events. Its close proximity to the sea in an exposed location meant that all details of the design were thoroughly resolved and detailed to be robust yet elegant. The space also acts as an extension with a new entrance along the main park axis and acts as a spill over area on busy days. A new entrance and boundary has been formed with the park while the Metals walkway has been shifted slightly to accommodate the raised promenade. The design takes account of the proposed future developments in the locality and has been particularly designed to integrate with the surrounding landscape and the park.
