The project Irish Rivers 2040 was set up to investigate a design-led approach to flood protection in Ireland. The project has been commissioned by the OPW, Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council and Cork City Council with co-funding from the Creative Industry Fund in the Netherlands and several Dutch offices. These include Dingeman Deijs Architects, Palmbout Urban Landscape, Van Paridon de Groot Landscape Architects and REDscape Landscape and Urbanism who led the initiative for the project. See www.redscape.ie, www.dingemandeijs.nl, www.palmbout.nl, www.vpxdg.nl.
The study applies the Dutch design experience to the Irish situation using working examples in which flood protection, amenity enhancement and water quality management are combined. This ‘Dutch method’ uses a highly integrated design approach and seeks to promote sustainable values and long-term aims for flood protection.
The aim of the webinar is to disseminate the learnings from the study looking at four case studies which demonstrate how flood protection in urban, suburban, and coastal areas can be approached. It is an interactive webinar that welcomes feedback and participation and wishes to explore how the design-led approach can be better facilitated by local authorities and its partners. The webinar is to be moderated by planner, Conor Norton.

“Right now, man-made commodities and natural stone is being used in construction or build projects throughout the Island of Ireland (and further a-field) where human beings or the environment were harmed to enable a cheap product supply. It is in your power to recognise and change business models that degrade human beings or our environment. It is up to you to specify and insist on landscape or building commodities that are manufactured or routed via supply chains who place the primacy of human rights and environmental protections at the core of their trade. Hardscape Ireland want to work in a co-ordinated effort with designers and contractors to create decent work for all as the foundations of a green, inclusive and resilient recovery thus this short presentation by Glenn Bradley, Head of Supply Chain for Hardscape will help you focus on existing and emerging regulations that will enable you to help end all forms of poverty, fight inequality and help tackle climate change.”
