With almost 40% of Ireland’s population living in rural areas, it is important that we get housing right and that it serves to cater for the lifelong needs of people. Having access to public services for all must be the cornerstone of planning, ensuring our rural towns and villages are well equipped to serve people. A shift in how we design our rural town and village centres is needed and making them attractive places to live must become a priority for Government and planners.
A housing policy that scatters houses across the countryside with no regard to long life living, is a recipe for the permanent non-delivery of essential services.
