Marlay Demesne is an important historic estate and major centre for play and recreation. The Demesne comprises over 100 hectares of parkland and contains many important structures, including the regency walled gardens and Marlay House, of Georgian origin.

A Masterplan has been prepared to facilitate development of the Demesne in a sustainable manner that will address the diverse range of modern public aspirations without compromising the Demesne's special qualities, integrity, heritage or biodiversity. Particular emphasis is placed upon the conservation and restoration of the architectural, garden and landscape heritage elements, including reorganisation of the Demesne to safeguard the18th Century central landscape.

The demesne caters to wide ranges of sporting activities such as football, rugby, GAA, all weather soccer pitches and tennis. In addition to extensive walking and jogging trails. The field fronting the House is used during the summer for rock concerts. The demesne is also hosts craft workshops, a model railway and farmers markets.
